Who Needs ECMO?

People with severe lung disease who cannot get enough oxygen into their blood with their own lungs can often be helped with a breathing machine. There are also medicines that can help the lungs do their job. There are some people who cannot be helped with either the breathing machine or the medicines, and many of them will die. ECMO has been used on these patients and in many cases has been lifesaving.
