Welcome to the Life Support Education Department (LSED)

The new 2015 American Heart Association (AHA) curriculum has been released and is being rolled out in stages with Basic Life Support (BLS) coming out first. Effective April 19th, we will begin teaching all BLS classes from the new material and will be implementing new AHA process changes. Here are some key points:

  • All BLS classes are the same now – there is no difference between a renewal class and an initial class. Classes are approximately 4 to 4.5 hours long.
  • AHA has eliminated BLS challenges, meaning ACLS and PALS classes will no longer offer renewal of BLS status added at the end of the day.
  • All participants must come to class with the appropriate textbook. The current book is “AHA Basic Life Support Manual, 2016 Edition” available in the UTMB Bookstore and from the AHA website through one of their approved online vendors.

For more information about our Basic Life Support classes, please see view Course Descriptions, located in the left navigation pane.

American Heart Association

The American Heart Association strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in BLS, ACLS, and PALS and has developed instructional materials for this purpose. Use of these materials in an educational course does not represent course sponsorship by the American Heart Association. Successful participation in one of these classes alone does not imply certification to perform the skills learned in the class.
