UTMB Department of Radiology is
responsible for patient diagnostic imaging. To provide the best
possible care for patients, it is critical that UTMB continue to provide
these services during any and all possible interruptions.
The BCP for Radiology has been designed for planned and unplanned
service interruptions that affect the normal execution of the patient
care imaging process or the interpretations of images.
It has bee determined that three high-level options
can be executed during a service interruption of any critical element in
the Radiology process.
Scheduled Outage (Low impact) – This option
assumes that systems and facilities are currently available, but an
anticipated service interruption will occur. It also assumes that the
pre-posted date and time for downtime has been communicated with all
departments. This notification allows Radiology to cancel non-critical
appointments or move appointments to alternate locations on campus.
Unscheduled Outage – Short Duration – This
assumes that an unscheduled and unforeseen service interruption has
occurred, but the projected duration is short-term. This option does
not necessarily mean that all systems that support the Radiology process
are unavailable. Non-critical appointments can be postponed, canceled
or moved to an alternate location on campus. Images can be stored in
temporary equipment until systems resume normal operations.
Unscheduled Outage – Long Duration – This assumes
that systems and/or facilities are unavailable due to an unscheduled and
unforeseen outage for an extended period. Non-critical appointments
will be canceled. If possible, alternate locations around campus will
be utilized to continue critical patient imaging. Portable imaging is
possible, but very limited.
The decision to alter normal Radiology procedures
in the event of service interruption will be the responsibility of the
director of Radiology. The director and the Radiology managers will be
responsible for executing this plan.
Details of how each of these options should be
executed are contained in this document. In addition, detailed
communication strategies, key personnel, key vendors,
supplies/suppliers, and business resumption plans are also included.
