Participants will receive a UTMB eMini
Medical School "diploma" for each semester completed. Diplomas are mailed every six to eight weeks
to participants who have completed all courses in a semester as of that date.
Courses are self-paced so you may take as much or as little time
needed.

This course will provide you the opportunity to learn more about what nanomedicine is, the research that is being done in the field and the benefits it can bring to healthcare.
Sir William Osler: Why I Like that Guy and What He Meant to Medicine is a brief look into the life of Sir William Osler, one of the most revered physicians in the history of medicine. He was professor of medicine at four universities, in three countries, and on two continents. A gifted clinician, he remains to this day a model for medical humanism and compassionate, patient centered care.
Semester III
Alzheimer's Disease - Part 1 looks at what causes Alzheimer's
disease, and asks the questions: what does it look like, and how can
we treat it?
Alzheimer's Disease - Part 2 discusses the ethical issues
surrounding Alzheimer's disease and asks the questions: what is the
impact on patients and love ones alike, what should
we expect, and how can we manage our expectations?
Pain, Pain Go Away with one of the world's leading experts in
pain research, this course studies what triggers common forms on
pain and why aspirin and opiates are both
important to the management of pain.
Surgery: From Lister to Robotics explains the evolution of
robotic surgery, from Joseph Lister's innovations in surgical
practice in the 1800's, to the promise of tomorrow's
robotic techniques.
The Art and Science of AIDS showcases graphic representations
of patient's perspective of their disease and looks at the status of
AIDS research and treatment. Some material
may be considered explicit.
Understanding Hepatitis, the Silent Epidemic educated you in
the areas of identifying the types of hepatitis we are at risk for
contracting, preventing, and treating hepatitis
Semester II
Alternative Medicine explores the latest therapies and their
rise in popularity throughout the United States.
Breathe Easy: Examining the Causes and Effects of Asthma
profiles how researchers and physicians at UTMB, home to one of only
12 Asthma and Allergic Diseases Research Centers in the U.S., are
working together to find ways for asthma sufferers to better manage
their disease and enjoy life.
Contagious Enthusiasm: Understanding Emerging Infectious Diseases
demonstrates how diseases such as West Nile virus are emerging in the
U.S. Share the excitement of UTMB’s premier group of infectious
disease investigators whose enthusiasm for their work is catching and
learn what’s being done to address new and emerging infectious
diseases.
Mistakes Happen: Dealing with Medical Error examines how
mistakes happen, what we know about them, better ways to deal with
mistakes, and what the future holds for one of our nation’s leading
causes of death and injury.
Responding to Bioterrorism and Chemical Threats addresses
health care responses to bioterrorism beginning with an overview of
threats and methods. Biological agents such as anthrax and smallpox
are addressed, as well as chemical agents and their history. The
course concludes with a review of psychological impacts of terrorism
on children.
Telehealth: Medicine’s New Frontier defines telemedicine, how
it works and what it means for the future of patient care. Imagine
providing expert medical advice from Texas to an oil rig in
Siberia—saving thousands of dollars by avoiding a medical evacuation

Your Body and How It Moves includes the importance of diet and
exercise and the many ways fitness can enhance one’s life.
Aging and the End of Life addresses the epidemiology of aging
and the changes that must be made when caring for older individuals.
The Beat Goes On studies state-of-the-art approaches to the
diagnosis, treatment and prevention of coronary heart disease, as
heart attacks and strokes remain the leading cause of death and
disability in the U.S.
The Facts About Gastrointestinal Health discovers the clinical
conditions and appropriate diagnostic methods for evaluating and
treating gastrointestinal disorders, including reflux disease,
hepatitis, diarrhea and colon cancer.
The Genomics Revolution focuses on the structure and function
of genes and the human genetic makeup, as well as the premises of gene
therapy and molecular diagnosis, and the ethical and economic
considerations.
His and Her Health provides an overview of the specific health
concerns of men and women, including the role of hormones and sex
steroids in the reproductive system.
Understanding and Overcoming Depression explores this treatable
illness that can greatly affect one’s quality of life, personal
relationships and work function.
