MEDICAL ELECTIVES FOR U.S. STUDENTS

The requirements and guidelines for medical electives are listed below. The electives which are offered for the current academic year can be viewed at http://meded.utmb.edu/electives.asp.

NOTE: Applications for 2008-2009 academic year (6/30/08-6/26/09) will be accepted beginning March 1, 2008; however, they will not be processed until early May, 2008, so that UTMB seniors may be scheduled first. Please check this site for updates to the Electives Brochure, period dates for 2008/09, and updated application materials in March , 2008.

  • The student must be attending an approved medical school.
  • The student must have completed appropriate work in each of the following areas (on a basis equivalent to the UTMB curriculum for major clerkships in Year 3): internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, psychiatry, and surgery.
  • The student must pay a fee of $50 per course.  Once we receive your application and have determined that you qualify to participate in electives at UTMB, we will email you to request payment.  Please do not send any money with your application.  Once we receive your payment, we will schedule your for the elective(s) and send your official acceptance letter to you.  In addition, if the student decides to drop a course and add another one in its place, another fee of $50 will be charged for each course addition.
  • Electives are arranged in segments of four weeks duration. The following are dates for elective experiences in the 2008 - 2009 Academic Year.

It is possible to have your elective(s) overlap parts of two consecutive blocks if both are available. Electives can be specially arranged during the Christmas break if approved by the responsible department.

Students are limited to 4 months of electives.

  • All students are required to provide appropriate approvals from the "home" school. Students must be in good standing and in their final year of medical school.
  • Foreign Medical Students and Other Students Without Liability Coverage:

Professional Liability Insurance - A fee is required for professional liability insurance. The fee is $2.08 for a 4 week period.

  • All visiting U.S. students are required to provide proof of professional liability insurance.
  • Health Care: Health care services are available on the UTMB campus; however, the student is financially responsible for services rendered.
  • Immunizations: Proof of immunizations must be provided by every applicant prior to being approved to attend UTMB. Immunization and Screening Requirements must be met. The Immunization History form, which must be completed and signed by your primary care provider or a nurse at the clinic where you receive your immunizations, must be mailed to our office along with your application(s).
  • Financial Arrangements: Stipends or other remuneration are not provided for elective studies. Tuition and fees are not charged to visiting medical students except for an ID

Badge fee of $5.00 and a Pager fee of $5.00 per month.

  • Housing: University housing may be available in a dormitory or University-owned fraternity house where room and board plans may be obtained. Assistance in meeting your housing needs (both University-owned and non-University) is coordinated by the Director of Auxiliary Enterprises, who may be contacted by telephone at 409/772-1898; by email address (dorms@utmb.edu) or by writing:

Arrangements for housing can also be made with local apartment and condominium complexes.

  • Registration: When you report to campus, you are required to come to Enrollment Services in the Lee Hage Jamail Student Center, 2nd Floor,, to complete the registration process and obtain clearance to attend the elective(s). Please be sure to bring a picture ID (e.g., valid driver’s license) as it is required and part of the registration process.
