FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID (FAFSA) or Renewal FAFSA

In order to be considered for Financial Aid, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Renewal FAFSA. The FAFSA calculates the student and (where applicable) parent(s) expected contribution from income and/or assets and provides that information to the schools indicated by the student. The FAFSA can be completed on line at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.

Students who file the FAFSA or Renewal FAFSA must be sure to include each institution you want to receive the results, i.e. The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, code 013976, Galveston, Texas.

In order to electronically sign and submit your application you will need to request and use your Personal Identification Number (or PIN). You can obtain a PIN or request a duplicate PIN (if lost) at http://www.pin.ed.gov/. If you are considered a dependent student for financial aid purposes and need to provide parent data, your parent(s) can also request a PIN to electronically sign the FAFSA.

If you are determined to be an independent student when you complete the FAFSA or Renewal FAFSA, and wish to be considered for Institutional Grants and Scholarships, you will have to provide your parent(s) information. Their information will also be used to determine your eligibility for Department of Health and Human Services funding, as they still require it be provided as part of the application process.

Your eligibility for Federal Perkins, Federal Direct Loans, Federal Work Study, Institutional and Alternative/External Loans will be based only on your information.

Department of Education Verification

1. If you are a dependent student and are selected for Verification, you (and your parent(s)) will have to complete and submit the Dependent Verification Form.
2. If you are an independent student, selected for verification, and not providing parent data to have your eligibility for Institutional Grant and Scholarship determined, you will need to complete and submit the Independent Verification Form.
3. You will also have to submit a copy of your federal income tax return. Dependent students, and Independent students applying for Institutional Grants and Scholarships, will also have to submit a copy of their parent(s) return.

Institutional Verification

• In order to determine your eligibility for Institutional Scholarships and Grants, you and your parents’ must each submit a signed copy of your/their Federal Income Tax Return.  You must also complete the Institutional Scholarship and Grant (ISG) Verification document and return to Enrollment Services.
