Grants

There are several grant and scholarship programs available to students who require financial aid to enable them to attend UTMB. These funds are available to students who meet specific eligibility requirements and who are making satisfactory progress in their professional school work. Students who have received acceptance for admission and
have completed the financial aid process have automatically been considered as applicants for these programs. Parental information is required for certain grants and scholarships.

Federal PELL Grant Program (PELL) (AH,N)
This is a federal program of entitlement basic to all other financial aid. All undergraduates who have never received a baccalaureate degree must apply for this grant in order to receive any other financial aid at UTMB. The program is based on a need-analysis formula which considers family income and assets, size of family, number of children attending postsecondary education, and other factors. Application for the grant is automatic when completing the FAFSA or Renewal FAFSA. Students wishing to apply only for the Federal PELL Grant may do so.

Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) (AH,N)
This grant program is designed for students who have financial need as determined by the standards set by the Commissioner of Education. Eligibility requirements take into account family income, assets and the number of children in the family. The student must be an undergraduate who has never received a baccalaureate degree and must be enrolled on at least half-time basis. All undergraduate applicants who complete both the UTMB Financial Aid Application and the Need Analysis Form will be considered for this program. Priority is given to students who are eligible for the Federal PELL Grant in accordance with the federal regulations.

SLEAP

Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership (LEAP) Program (AH, G, M, N, NG)
This grant is awarded to qualified applicants on the basis of financial need. Recipients must be enrolled at least half time. They must also be citizens, nationals or permanent residents of the United States. They must submit the required applications and need-analysis documentation, and they must continue to make satisfactory academic progress. Grants may not exceed $2,500 during any one fiscal year, nor may they be less than $90. The grant, administered by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, is awarded by Enrollment Services. This was formerly named the State Student Incentive Grant (SSIG).

Texas Public Education Grants (TPEG) (AH, G, M, N, NG)
This grant is awarded to qualified applicants on the basis of financial need. Recipients must be enrolled at least half time. They must also be citizens, nationals or permanent residents of the United States. They must submit the required applications and needs-analysis documentation, and they must continue to make satisfactory academic progress. This grant is awarded in conjunction with the institutional policy on grants and scholarships. Institutional grant and scholarship amounts will be determined on the basis of average budget cost.

Texas Grant
Texas Grant funding is available to prior recipients who are maintaining the program’s satisfactory academic progress standards. Eligibility is confirmed with the State before an award is made. If funded, the entire amount of the student’s tuition and fees must be covered by either the Texas Grant or a combination of the Texas Grant and other grant funding (excluding Federal Pell Grant funds). Students who completed an Associates Degree prior to enrolling at UTMB may apply for initial funding if they believe they meet the criteria.

Federal Work Study Program (FWS)

This program is designed to provide part-time employment for students with financial need who wish to help pay a part of their educational expenses by working.  Federal Work-Study is awarded by Enrollment Services, often in combination with other forms of financial aid, to help meet educational expenses.  By attempting to place studentsin areas fo work in which they are interested, the program helps to stimulate the development of a worthwhile experience of work for the student attending college.  Students may request work-study consideration when submitting the UTMB Application for Financial Aid.  Students who participate in this program work an average of 10 hours per week.  Enrollment Services will assist students in locating employment for the work-study award.  Work-Study is available only on the Galveston campus.
