Hazardous Chemical Spills and Exposures
Chemical spills may include formaldehyde (formalin), disinfectants (Cidex OPA), Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and chemotherapeutic agents.
In case of a chemical spill:- Personal protection and contaminated individuals are primary and clean-up of spills is secondary.
- Notify personnel in the immediate area.
- Evacuate nonessential personnel and isolate the spill area .
- Attend to persons who may have been contaminated or exposed.
- Follow established spill procedures for your area.
- Notify your supervisor and EHS at (409) 772-1781*.
- Stand by to advise EHS of immediate situation. EHS will either assist staff by phone for small spill clean-up procedures or dispatch a Hazardous Spill Response Team for clean-up.
- Notify personnel in the immediate area that a chemical exposure has occurred.
- Attend to persons who may have been contaminated or exposed.
- Flush eyes with water for 20 minutes.
- Wash exposed skin with copious amounts of soap and water.
- Seek medical attention.
- Notify your supervisor and Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) (409)772-1781*.
*After normal business hours (8:00 am - 5:00 pm) contact the university telephone operator (409) 772-1011 for the EHS On-Call Person.
