Dr. Thompson, chair of family medicine since 1998, is among the first female clinical chairwomen in UTMB's history. She is a professor of family medicine, internal medicine, preventative medicine and community health. She serves as interim director for UTMB hospital clinics and assistant dean for the faculty practice. Thompson, a native Texan, graduated from the University of Texas Austin and completed her medical degree and residency at UTMB. She developed the third-year clerkship in family medicine and was predoctoral education program director for four years. Before assuming leadership of family medicine, she was medical director of Gulf Health Nursing Home in Galveston. She is board certified in family medicine with added qualifications in geriatric medicine. Dr. Thompson's research interests include geriatrics, medical ethics, and assessment of clinical competence in medical students.
