Week GSBS Dean’s
Report – Faculty Senate 10/8/12
- The UT System health
affairs Graduate Deans Council held its 1st meeting of the new
academic year in Austin on Saturday, Sept 15, 2012. The meeting was hosted by Dr. Patricia
Hurn Associate Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences Research. Dr. Ken Shine, Executive Vice Chancellor
for Health Affairs also attends these meetings. A copy of the Agenda for the meeting is attached
to give you an indication of the topics covered and a list of the members
in attendance.
- On Sept 20-22, the Dean
attended the annual meeting of the AAMC GREAT Group in Nashville, TN. The meeting this year was a joint
meeting with the GRAND Group, and the meeting included as usual the
Postdoctoral Leaders Section of the GREAT Group. Ms. Jo Bremer, Director of the Office of
Postdoctoral Affairs in the GSBS, also attended the meeting.
A highlight of the meeting for us
was the presentation of an award to Dr. Mark Hellmich, Program Director of the
GSBS Program “Human Pathophysiology & Translational Medicine” for the
program’s new and innovative curriculum.
The award was one of 5 made, and Ms Christina Cestone, the Program
Coordinator was present to accept the award for Dr. Hellmich. She also presented a poster on the curriculum
at the meeting. Copies of the award
announcement and Dr. Hellmich’s winning abstract are
attached.
- The week of Sept 17 was
Posdoc Appreciation Week. GSBS
hosted an opening reception on 9/17 in the Caduceus Room. Several other events occurred during the
Week, including Reel Science and a Career Roundtable session where several
GSBS alumni representing several different career venues returned to talk
with postdocs about various career tracks open to them.
