School of Medicine Dean’s Report – Faculty Senate 4/09/12

 

 

 

The Road Ahead document sums up UTMB’s strategic vision for FY2012-2015. The three-year institutional plan is comprised of key steps that help to maintain our focus on the journey toward our goals. This includes periodic monitoring of our progress using score cards. The Academic Score Card for the 2nd quarter is attached.

 

 

Last month, the UTMB Health Polar Medical Operations began overseeing medical services in Antarctica in support of the National Science Foundation’s U.S. Antarctic Program (USAP).

 

The program is comprised of an administrative office located in Galveston and

three USAP stations in Antarctica, each containing an onsite medical department to provide healthcare services for program participants.

 

The Galveston office provides the following:

 

·      Administrative support

·      Logistics/acquisition of all medical supplies

·      Pharmaceuticals

·      Equipment utilized by the program

·      Oversight of the physical qualification screening process for over 3,500 applicants comprised of scientists, researchers and professional work force.

 

 

During the March 16th Match Day Ceremony, 230 graduating seniors learned their residency destinations (see attached Match Day statistics for UTMB). The Class of 2012 is the first entering class post-Hurricane Ike.   

 

 

Robert M.A. Hirschfeld, M.D., Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and holder of the Titus H. Harris Chair and Harry K. Davis Professorship, has been selected as this year’s Senior Faculty Marshal, and will lead the procession of faculty during School of Medicine Commencement on Saturday, June 2nd at 10 am in the Moody Gardens Convention Center. 

 

Dr. Hirschfeld is an international expert in the diagnosis and treatment of bipolar disorders, depression and anxiety disorders. His leadership qualities and expertise in these areas have earned him many accolades.
