Research Interests

Dr. Sellin’s basic research focuses on the early stages of neoplastic transformation of the colonic epithelium and the potential role of diet as a modifier of that transformation. Specifically, he is studying the role of oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes, including beta-catenin and APC, in the hyperproliferative colonic mucosa and the ability of calcium and fiber to alter the molecular profile of that epithelium. Additionally Dr. Sellin has a long-standing interest in ion transport in the gut. He has studied the role of steroids in altering transport, the segmental heterogeneity of transport in the colon and the role of short-chain fatty acids in colonic transport. Dr. Sellin’s clinical research interests are in the areas of chronic diarrhea and inflammatory bowel disease.

Dr. Sellin conducts clinical trials of new and novel therapies for ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. In addition to studying the advances in therapies for inflammatory bowel disease, he is examining the effect of race and ethnicity on IBD. Ongoing studies focus on intestinal permeability, inflammation and mediators.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Sellin specializes in the evaluation and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease and chronic diarrhea.
