Dr. Szauter received her medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, and completed residency training in internal medicine at Baltimore City Hospital. After completing fellowship training in gastroenterology (MetroHealth Medical Center, Cleveland Ohio) and nutrition (St. Vincent Charity Hosptial, Cleveland Ohio) she joined the UTMB faculty in 1990. She currently serves as the director of the GI fellowship program.

The focus of her research has been in the area of medical education, specifically in human and computer simulation. She has a joint appointment in the Office of Educational Development and serves as the medical director for UTMB's Standardized Patient Program.
