Dr. Larry Scott

          Title: Professor of Medicine/Director Clinical Motility Program
          Degree: MD, MA

Biosketch

Dr. Scott received his BS degree cum laude from Davidson College and his MD from Vanderbilt University. He did a residency in internal medicine at Vanderbilt and a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Iowa. After serving 2 years as a medical officer in the United States Army, he joined the faculty at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, in the Division of Gastroenterology, in July 1976. In 2000, he took a faculty development leave and obtained an MA in biomedical ethics at Case Western Reserve University. In 2005, he moved to UTMB as Professor of Medicine and Director of the Clinical Motility Program with an associate membership in the Institute for the Medical Humanities.


Research Interests

Dr. Scott’s interests have largely been in the area of esophageal disorders and gastrointestinal motility. As Director of the Clinical Motility Program at UTMB, he oversees the function of the clinical motility lab which offers gastrointestinal manometry, ambulatory pH monitoring, and hydrogen breath testing. He helped create the interdisciplinary Swallowing Disorders Clinic. While seeing patients with esophageal and swallowing disorders, he also sees referrals for other motility problems including defecation disorders and incontinence. His other focus is on biomedical ethics and in particular, ethical issues confronting gastroenterologists; he has authored a series of essays on ethical problems in gastroenterology, that have been published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology. He also takes call for hospital ethics consultations. Dr. Scott has won several teaching awards over the years, including the Benji F. Brooks, MD, Outstanding Clinical Faculty Award, at the University of Texas-Houston, given by the Alumni Association. He has periodically been included in the listing of Best Doctors in America and has been awarded Fellowship in the American Gastroenterological Association.
