Welcome to the GCRC

The UTMB General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) is part of a national network of centers usually located within hospitals of academic medical centers. The primary mission of the GCRC is to provide a research infrastructure for clinical investigators who receive grant support from other NIH components or from other Federal agencies. The GCRC is equipped to handle many types of studies involving research with human subjects. It accords highest priority to studies that are sponsored by NIH. In addition, those studies that are supported by other external funding and those who propose to obtain funding in the future are also highly valued.

The GCRC provides:

  • An optimal setting for controlled studies by both basic and clinical investigators

  • Bi-directional and multidisciplinary interactions among those involved in basic and clinical research on both children and adults

  • Environment and resources for developing future physician-scientists in the clinical research arena

  • Technological and therapeutic approaches to ensure rapid translation of new, basic scientific knowledge into effective patient care.

Hurricane Ike News: GCRC resumed operations on Monday, October 13, 2008 at 7:00 a.m. Because of lack of clinic availability, many investigators do not have space to carry out their IRB-approved clinical research. The GCRC facility and staff are available to help these investigators even if they have not previously used the GCRC and their study is not currently GCRC approved.

The General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) units on John Sealy Hospital 5A/B and Children's Hospital 6th floor  resumed operations on Monday, October 13, 2008 at 7:00 a.m.

The Texas City Satellite was opened on November 17, 2008. Two Exam rooms are available to Investigators by appointment only. The clinic is located in the Oceanview Transitional Care Center (formerly Danforth Memorial Hospital) at 519 9th Ave. North, Texas City. Appointments can be made by calling the GCRC at 409-772-1218.

For further information, please contact Dr. Don Powell, GCRC Program Director, or Lori A. Wiseman, GCRC Administrator, at (409) 772-1950.
