Nursing

The GCRC research nurses implement protocol management by independently performing the nursing process (assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation) within the specialty practice area of clinical research nursing. Each GCRC nurse acts as the primary nurse for specific protocols and serves as the resource person for their assigned studies. Examples of clinical research nursing support include:

  • Coordination of Initiation meetings and Inservices with the Investigator, and other research team members at the commencement of the protocols and throughout the duration of the study;

  • Witnessing the informed consent process to recognize, respect and support patients’ rights;

  • Travel to other locations on campus in order to provide research support for the patient who may be better cared for in a different environment (e.g. TDCJ, ICU, burn unit, or other clinics);

  • Perform competent physical, pathophysiological, psychosocial, cultural, spiritual, learning, and/or age-appropriate nursing assessments of research subjects

  • Provide patient monitoring and communicate patient needs and/or changes to the Investigator

  • Perform simple to complex data collection and procedures related to the research protocol including phlebotomy, intravenous access, specimen collection and processing, operation and maintenance of specialized equipment.
