Administration of the GCRC

Principal Investigator

  • Garland D. Anderson, M.D., Dean of the School of Medicine is Principal Investigator of the NCRR grant that supports the GCRC, and is ultimately responsible for the administration of the grant award, the conduct of research and the administration of the GCRC.

 Program Administration
  • The GCRC Program Director, reports directly to the Dean and is responsible for administration of the GCRC and research compliance. Don W. Powell, MD is the current Program Director.

  • GCRC Research Subject Advocate, reports directly to the Dean and is responsible for research subject safety. Michele Carter, PhD, was appointed 2001

  • GCRC Executive Committee meets monthly to coordinate the daily administrative management and to plan the strategic direction of the GCRC.

  • The Associate and Assistant Program Directors, Biostatistician and Administrative Director report to the Program Director.

  • The Head Nurse/Nurse Manager and the Bionutrition Research Manager report directly to the Program Director for patient care and scientific issues, but report through the Administrative Director for fiscal and personnel issues.

UTMB Oversight of the GCRC and Clinical Research
  • Wayne R. Patterson, PhD,  is the Director of the Office of Research Subject Protection and his office coordinates Institutional Review Board (IRB) activities.

  • The UTMB Institutional Review Boards are faculty committees appointed by the Vice President for Research responsible for safeguarding the rights and welfare of the subjects who participate in the research activity.

  • The GCRC Advisory Committee (GAC) meets at least monthly to review and approve new protocols and the allocation of GCRC resources, as well as to oversee the UTMB GCRC budget, the needs and career development of GCRC investigators, and the new scientific initiatives of the GCRC.
