Goals
1) To provide the student with an experience in geriatric medicine off-campus/setting
2) To learn the role of a primary care physician
Objectives
Be able to evaluate and manage:
1) Elderly patients in a nursing home facility
2) Elderly patients in a non-hospital based skilled nursing facility
3) Home-bound elderly patients in their homes
4) Elderly patients in community-based outpatient clinics
Description of Course Activities
The student will:
1) Accompany faculty member and geriatric fellow in skilled nursing facility, nursing home and patient's home
2) Participate in health prevention and promotion in geriatric community-based programs
3) Be accompanied by a physician, geriatric fellow, geriatric nurse practitioner and other health care team members to assess patients in their homes
GERIATRIC CONSULTATION
MEDU-4030
Goals
1) To provide the student with an experience in geriatric consultation and pre-operative assessment
2) To learn systematic evaluation of common clinical problems of the elderly
3) To understand comprehensive geriatric assessment
Objectives
Student will improve their ability to:
1) Appreciate the importance of mutidisciplinary care in the evaluation and management of older patients
2) Evaluate and manage common clinical problems in the elderly, including pre-operative assessment
3) Organize appropriate discharge planning and follow-up of older patients
Description of course activities
1) Participate in inpatient consultation rounds and geriatric assessment of patients in clinic and on no-medical wards.
2) Students will be given daily reading assisgnments on clinical issues
3) Students will participate in organized interdisciplinary meetings
4) Students will attend twice weekly didactics in geriatric syndromes
