The Role of our Community...
UTMB is part of a thriving community; the campus shares the east end of Galveston Island with residents, places of business, houses of worship and community organizations.
The support and participation of the local community is important to the success of this program, for many reasons. We understand the intent of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases was to these facilities at institutions with a) the most expertise and demonstrated ability to succeed, and b) in communities most supportive of the initiatives.
At UTMB, service to and partnerships with our neighbors are two of our core values. It’s important to the university to work alongside our local community on this important national mission. Realistically, we do not expect to secure everyone’s unconditional support. We respect differing opinions and honor the right of individuals to hold such opinions. Our hope is that a majority of the community will continue to understand the importance of these efforts both locally and nationally, will have confidence in the capabilities of our institution, and will ultimately trust UTMB to take every precaution to keep people safe.
UTMB has received and is appreciative of endorsements from the Galveston City Council, the Galveston Chamber of Commerce, the Galveston Economic Development Partnership, the Baptist Ministers Association of Galveston County, other regional groups, and many local, state and federal elected officials.
The university has presented its plans to multiple groups and community organizations, including the University Area Association; the Galveston Republican Women's Club; the UTMB Development Board; university employees; faculty and students; local seniors participating in "Senior Night Out" events; and others. (Contact us if you'd like to schedule a presentation for your group or organization.)
Feature stories and notices have run in the Galveston County Daily News, the Houston Chronicle and other local, regional and national newspapers.
