Nancy W. Dickey, MD, Immediate Past
President of the American Medical Association, is a board-certified family physician from
College Station, Texas. Dr. Dickey was elected President-Elect of the American Medical
Association in June 1997 and assumed the role of President in June 1998. Prior to her
election, Dr. Dickey served as Chair of the Board of Trustees from November 1995 to June
1997, as its Vice Chair from 1994 to 1995. Elected to the AMA Board of Trustees in 1989,
she served as Secretary-Treasurer of the AMA from 1993 to 1994 and as a member of the
Boards Executive Committee since 1991. Dr. Dickey is the program director for the
Brazos Valley Family Practice Program affiliated with the Texas A&M University in
College Station, Texas and is a Professor in the Department of Family and Community
Medicine at the Texas A&M University College of Medicine.
Dr. Dickey chaired the AMAs Ad Hoc Technical Advisory
Committee on Health System Reform (1993 to 1994); the Finance Committee (1992 to 1994) and
served as a member of the Boards Subcommittee on Membership from 1993 to 1994. She
served as an AMA commissioner for the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare
Organizations (JCAHO) from 1989 through 1995.
During her tenure as Chair and President, Dr. Dickey helped
create the National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF) at the AMA, and currently serves as
the Chair of the NPSF Board of Directors.
Prior to Dr. Dickeys election to the Board, she served
on the AMA Ad Hoc Committee on Women in Organized Medicine (1979-1980); the AMA Council on
Ethical and Judicial Affairs (1980-1989) and as its Chair from 1984 to 1987. She is a
Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and has served as Vice President of
the Texas Medical Association from 1986 to 1987 and as a Delegate to the Texas Medical
Association from Fort Bend County Medical Association from 1984 to 1989.
A graduate from the Stephen F. Austin State University, she
received her medical training at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, where
she was a recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award. She has served as a reviewer for
the Journal of the American Medical Association and on the editorial advisory boards of
Patient Care, Medical World News and Medical Ethics Advisor. She currently serves on the
editorial board of Archives of Family Medicine.
Dr. Dickey has taken an active role in various community
activities including coaching in a youth soccer league from 1986 to 1988 and as a sponsor
for the United Methodist Youth Fellowship from 1991 to 1995. She has served as a member on
the boards of directors of the Hastings Center, the Office of Early Childhood Development,
and the local chapter of the American Heart Association. She is a member of the Christ
United Methodist Church in College Station.
Dr. Dickey and her husband, Franklin (Champ), have three
children, Danielle, Wilson and Elizabeth. |
