Dr. Jerome P. Kassirer presented "Managed Care
and the Morality of the Market Place" on Jan. 12, 2000.
"Never in the 2000 years of medicine did our
ethical constructs envision a market-driven health care system," Kassirer said,
amplifying on the perspective he brought to the lecture. "This amoral system often
requires physicians to serve two masters: their patients and their employers. Fragmented
care, threats to the survival of academic medical centers, and a progressive increase in
uninsured people are other consequences. How to behave in this new environment is the
question."
Kassirer was editor of the New England
Journal of Medicine from 1991 well into 1999.
The talk, the second Health Policy Forum of
the 1999-2000 academic year, was sponsored by the Presidents Council and organized
by the Institute for the Medical Humanities.
