FACT SHEET
John Kitzhaber

Physician and immediate past Governor of Oregon John Kitzhaber will speak in Galveston and Houston on reforming America’s health care system. Venues include two events on the UTMB campus (details above) and a keynote in the Aspen Ballroom of the Houstonian Hotel on Monday, March 17, at 7 p.m.

The keynote speech is titled, “Medical Justice—or Treatment for Just Us? Creating a Rational Health Care System that Equitably Serves America in an Era of Tough Choices and Tight Budgets.”  It is sponsored by the Institute for the Medical Humanities at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) and co-sponsored by the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy of Rice University.

Dr. Kitzhaber, a 1969 graduate of Dartmouth College who earned his medical degree from the Oregon Health Sciences University in 1973, practiced emergency medicine for 13 years before his 1978 election to the Oregon House of Representatives.  Oregon voters promoted Kitzhaber to the Oregon Senate in 1980, and he became Senate President in 1985.

While in the Oregon Senate, his most notable accomplishment was the landmark Oregon Health Plan, which he authored and organized support for. During this time, he worked as a consultant on health and environmental issues. Then in 1994—the year his Oregon Health Plan went into effect—Oregon voters elected Kitzhaber governor. He was reelected to a second term in 1998.  Because of Oregon state term limits, Kitzhaber was ineligible to seek reelection as governor in 2002. He left office in January 2003.

Tickets for the dinner, which begins at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 17, in the Aspen Ballroom of the Houstonian Hotel, are $25 per person. Cocktails will be served from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Seating is limited. For reservations and information, please call (409) 772-6377.
