Worksite Health Promotion Overview
Today's
workforce is comprised of approximately 110 million people who spend a
majority of their time at the workplace.
The
goal of worksite health promotion is to reduce health risks through "the
process of fostering awareness, influencing attitudes, and identifying
alternatives so that individuals can make informed choices and change their
behavior in order to achieve an optimum level of physical and mental health
and improve their physical and social environment"
(Breckon,
1982).
The U.S.
currently spends over 1 trillion dollars annually on health care; about 5% of
this money goes toward public health, and only a mere fraction of that five
percent actually reaches health promotion. Experts in the field agree
that by devoting more attention to the prevention of common health risks such
as high-fat diets, obesity, high blood pressure, and smoking, the health care
system could save time and money treating - what are in most cases -
preventable diseases (Goetzel, 2001).
