Grappling Obstacles

Identifying and Eliminating Obstacles

In every ascent, there are obstacles that must be overcome before further progress can be made.  Some obstacles are anticipated, while others are not.  The purpose of this stage is to remove obstacles, that prevent you from reaching your goal.

Review the following examples and list obstacles that may hinder your progress
(Trek Guide optional).

 Goal

Obstacle Options to Eliminate Obstacles
Healthy Eating  Snacking on cookies, candy bar, chips    Keep healthy snacks on hand such as fruits, carrots, or popcorn
Smoking Cessation  Smoking after eating or stressful situations...  Brush teeth, chew gum, or exercise
Exercise  Time or work schedule...  Plan ahead, bring gym clothes w/ you, develop a workout schedule

Motivational Tips

Remind yourself why you began your journey!

At times in a particularly difficult portion of the climb, it’s hard to remember why you started in the first place.  Take a breather, and remember that difficult phases in the journey are only temporary, and will eventually pass if you press on toward the Summit.  (If need be, review the Why statement on your Trek Guide).

Other Helpful Tips

Exercise Exercise with a partner or hire a personal trainer. If you have children, find a fitness  center that provides childcare. Are you getting enough exercise?  Are you doing the right exercises?  Have an Exercise Specialist design a workout program for you.
Nutrition Make a weekly meal plan for dinner for you and your family (this will save on time, and give you a chance to plan healthier meals); bring healthy snacks to work such as fruits, veggies, or low-fat popcorn vs. cookies and chips.
Smoking Join smoking cessation program, look for new information on smoking from the American Cancer Society online; see what tips they may have to help you quit.

Don't bail now!   Keep trekkin'.  Once you reach your sixth week, proceed to the Summit.  (Trek Guide)
