                                 Optimal Health Trek

Summit

Congratulations, you have reached the summit!

Reward Yourself!

Now that you've reached the summit, take time to reward yourself for completing your journey.   Your reward may be as simple as going to a baseball game, a movie, or to your favorite restaurant.  You may also reward yourself with a new outfit, getting a massage, or  reading a good book.

Reaching the summit means you have accomplished your goal and are now ready to gear up for the next climb!

Choose a Different Mountain

Now that you've achieved your first Health Trek goal, it may be time to add to your current goal, or set a new goal.  See examples below:

Adding to an existing goal If your goal was to exercise 3 times a week, add one more day and exercise 4 times a week.

If your goal was to drink 3 glasses or water a day, move it up to 4 etc.

Starting a new goal If you've reached a goal in a particular area such as nutrition, pick your next goal in a different health area such as Exercise, Stress, or Sleep.

Don't Plateau!

Keep challenging your body.  If you stay on the same routine too long, you will no longer see the desired results.  This is referred to as 'hitting a plateau'.  Examples:

If you find yourself walking all of the time, shake things up a bit!  Try integrating some cross training by walking on a different surface, swimming, playing a sport, biking, or trying a treadmill or elliptical cross-trainer.  If you have been consistent with you cardiovascular activity, you may want to work on building muscles with a strength training program.

Free Tip: Muscle helps you burn fat more efficiently in the body, so tone those muscles!

You've increased your fruit and vegetable intake.  Do you find yourself eating the same fruits and vegetables each week?  Explore the grocery store for some you haven’t tried yet.

Other helpful hints for your next Climb:

  • Don’t try to conquer the Whole Mountain at one time – When you have been successful at one goal, it is easy to think you are ready to take on a much larger goal.  Remember, climbers move from Beginner to Intermediate to Advanced Mountains, and you should do the same with your goals!  Take your climb one step at a time.
  • Don’t forget what you’ve accomplished – As you move on to more challenging goals, don’t forget to maintain the goals you have in place.  If you find yourself losing ground on healthy habits  while attempting a new goal, you may want to go back and  re-hone previous goals first.

The climb to the Summit is a progressive trek.  Everyone's journey is different, and some mountains are harder to tackle than others.  Remember, the reward is not only in reaching the top, but also in the accomplishments along the way.  The skills you've developed on this trek will guide your health decisions for a lifetime.
