Douglas W. Matthews
Assistant Vice President for Government Relations
As assistant vice president for government relations, Mr. Matthews works with federal, state and local officials to secure support and educate them on UTMB needs and priorities.
His primary job focus is working with congressional offices and federal government agencies such as the Health and Human Services – Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Department of Commerce, Department of Agriculture – Rural Development, American International Health Alliance (AIHA), Homeland Security, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), etc.
Doug has served in the capacity as Director of External Affairs at UTMB since October 1996. His professional career includes 21 years working for the City of Galveston - 11 years as city manager, 7 years as assistant city manager and 3 years as grants coordinator. In 1989, he was appointed a member of the Board of Regents for Lamar University by Texas Governor Bill Clements. He also served on the UTMB Development Board for 6 years.
Doug is a product of Galveston Public Schools. He is a graduate of Galveston Ball High and Lamar University with a BS Degree in Government.
