Existing logos for
individual UTMB entities cannot be used under the current graphic
identity standards, regardless of how long they've been in use or
whether they were officially approved in the past. Items carrying
individual department or program logos should transition to the new logo
and identity system as they are reproduced. (In most cases, existing
inventories can be depleted before items with the new logo are ordered.)

Institutional logo
The logo represents the university as a whole and is
appropriate for any UTMB promotional publication. Either it or a
customized UTMB logo should appear on promotional publications. The
institutional logo should not be used in addition to a customized logo.

Customized logos
The customized version of the logo allows UTMB entities to promote name
recognition of individual areas without compromising overall recognition
of the institution as a whole.
Approved artwork only
- Approved artwork for
the institutional logo is available for download
in various sizes and formats.
- Approved artwork for
institutional and customized logos is available from the Public
Affairs Office and from Biocommunications/Academic Services. (See
"Resource Guide" for more information.)
- The logo must be
reproduced using approved artwork.
- Approved artwork should
not be modified, reproportioned or re-created.
- Please note that the
logo used on the web and in video productions takes a slightly
different form than that used for printed publications, to
accommodate the special considerations for each type of media.
Print, web and video logos are not interchangeable. For
more information on use of the logo in electronic media, visit the
UTMB web page standards and the
institutional standards for video.
Appearance
- The logo is used as a
single visual element. The components of the logo cannot be used
individually. At no time should the star-and-field graphic be used
alone.
- For legibility, the
full logo (which includes the name of the university spelled out
underneath) should never be less than 2 inches across, measured from
the far left tip of the star to the end of the "B" in
"UTMB."
- If the logo must be
smaller than 2 inches across (for instance, on specialty items such
as lapel pins or pens), the university name should be dropped from
the logo for legibility reasons. Where possible in these instances,
the university name should appear prominently elsewhere on the
piece.
- In most cases, the logo
should appear on the front page or front cover of printed
publications, usually at the bottom of the page to
"anchor" the design.
- The logo should always
be printed on a solid background. It should never
be printed over a pattern, photograph, texture or graduated tint.
- The logo should never
be used as part of another logo.
- The logo can appear
alongside logos from other organizations (for instance, when UTMB is
one of several sponsors or hosts for an event). In such cases, make
sure to leave the appropriate amount of blank space around the logo
so that it maintains its integrity as a distinct graphic element.
(See "Maintaining Proper Distance" for more information.)
Logo color scheme
options
There are three basic versions of the logo:

Blue and Red
- The star-and-field and
"The University of Texas Medical Branch" must appear in
PMS 288 (blue).
- For customized logos,
the name of the department or service line also must appear in PMS
288 (blue).
- "UTMB" must
appear in PMS 186 (red).
- The two-color version
must always appear on a white background in publications.

Black
- Can be placed on a
light background.
- Can be embossed or
foil-stamped on publications.

Reversed
- Can be placed on a dark
background on specialty items.
- Can be accomplished by
reversing the black logo out of a solid field of color in
publications.

Maintaining proper
distance
The logo, whether institutional or customized, should be a distinct
graphic element, with a certain amount of blank space surrounding it.
This space varies in proportion to the size of the logo used. It should
equal the distance from the baseline of the "UTMB" (in the
case of an institutional logo) or from the baseline of the entity name
(in the case of a customized logo) to the baseline of the university
name.

Incorrect
- Please note: When
presenting the logo in black, foil stamping or white, the inside
portion of the star should be the color of the background. It should
never be white.
