Joal also works with ethics committees and staff at a teaching hospital and a large community hospital. As Director of Research Ethics she chairs Advocate's Institutional Review Board.

She also teaches research ethics at Midwestern University and lectures several times a year on research ethics for SoCRA (Society of Clinical Research Associates).
