We are pleased to announce that John Caskey graduated with his Doctorate of Philosophy in Medical Humanities on May 5, 2007. The title of John's dissertation is Cultivating Moral Medicine: Ethical Criticism and the Relevance of Richard Selzer to Medical Ethics Education. Dr. Anne Hudson Jones served as Chair of John's dissertation committee.

On June 2, 2007, John will graduate from medical school, and, shortly thereafter, he will head off to Providence, Rhode Island, where he will begin his residency training in Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Child Psychiatry.

Given the opportunity, there are actually two bits of advice John would like to pass on to aspiring IMH graduates:

Be careful to allow the ideas for your potential dissertation focus adequate time to germinate and evolve. Having tried to arrive at this point hastily and prematurely, I met only frustration, worry, and dissatisfaction. Rather, it was only upon taking adequate time for experimentation and exploration that the right idea ultimately came along.
As much as possible, try to remain faithful in your scholarly pursuits to that which makes the IMH unique and valuable. The commitment to medical humanism, whatever that amorphous concept might have come to mean for you, deserves our consistent and careful attention. Otherwise, very little remains to separate the Institute's curriculum from that which one might discover at any of the various bioethics centers around the country. The IMH possesses a unique historical and intellectual legacy, and it is one that merits preservation through the unique and interdisciplinary creations of its students.

John treasures the numerous professional and social relationships forged during his time in Galveston and will dearly miss his life and family at the Institute.

While at the IMH, John received numerous awards including the 2007 Harry H. Ransom Dissertation Award, which was presented by Dean Cooper at the GSBS commencement.
