IMH Happenings9/25/2006Dana Bjarnason, RN, MA, CAN Has been reappointed to a four year term on the American Nurses Association Ethics and Human Rights Advisory Board. Our work is focused on revising the ANA's Ethics and Human Rights position statements. She recently assisted with the revision of a hydration and nutrition statement and am working with a group to revise others on cultural diversity and racism. Frontera de Salud Co-founder, Fausto S. Meza, M.D., was honored as the keynote speaker on Friday, September 15, 2006, at the Hector P. Garcia, M.D. Awards Ceremony and Luncheon. Dr. Meza won the Cultural Competence Essay Award hosted by the UTMB President's Office and he presented that winning essay at the luncheon. Laura Hermer, JD, LLM Former Visiting Scholar and IMH graduate program instructor, served on a panel at the 2006 Memorial Hermann Health Law Conference on Reforming the Law of Emergency Medial Care. Her article Is EMTALA Really the Cause of Emergency Department Overcrowding? Was featured in the Health Law News published quarterly by the University of Houston Health Law and Policy Institute. She also wrote an article with Lisa Graybill that appeared in the ACLU Dispatch 3, Anti-SLAPP Strategies: Fighting for Freedom of Speech. William J. Winslade, PhD, JD, PhD 6th edition of Clinical Ethics: A Practical Approach to Ethical Decisions in Clinical Medicine, revised with A.R. Jonsen and M. Siegler. He also made several presentations in 2006, including Grand Rounds for Internal Medicine at UTMB, one at a conference in California, and two in Chicago at different conferences.
