The Truman Graves Blocker Scholars Fund is named in honor of the late Truman Graves Blocker Jr., M.D. Dr. Blocker was the former executive director, and later the first president, of UTMB (1964 to 1974). As a noted plastic surgeon, he emulated many of the qualities sought in physician-scientists today. The Blocker Scholars Endowment supports medical school and graduate school training for outstanding MD-PhD students. These students, known as Blocker Scholars, receive stipend support through the Blocker Scholars endowment and also gain recognition for this highest honor awarded to the M.D./Ph.D. students. The selection process is thorough, and the highly competitive awards are determined based on academic merit.

Other M.D./Ph.D. students from the IMH who have received this prestigious award in the past include Michael Bevins, Jason Morrow, and Angie Scott.
