Teaches courses in religion and science, theological ethics, Catholic social thought, and applied ethics, especially bioethics. Before coming to Davidson in 2005, served as Director of Rice University's Program on Biotechnology, Religion, and Ethics; Academic Director at the Institute of Religion in the Texas Medical Center; Research Fellow in Theological Ethics at the Center for Medical Ethics at Baylor College of Medicine; staff ethicist for the New York State Task Force on Life and the Law; and lecturer in philosophy at the University of Massachusetts. Former ethics columnist for Commonweal magazine. Founding co-editor of Christian Bioethics. For seven years, senior editor of the multi-volume Bioethics Yearbook series (Kluwer). Service on several advisory and editorial boards and currently a member of the editorial board of The Journal of Medicine and Philosophy. Co-author of two book-length bioethics policy reports, editor or co-editor of six other volumes in theological and medical ethics, and contributor of numerous book chapters. Publications in scholarly and popular journals, including Academic Medicine, American Journal of Human Genetics, Bioethics Forum, Cambridge Health Care Quarterly, Christian Bioethics, Commonweal, Ethics, Harvard Theological Review, Hastings Center Report, HEC Forum, Human Gene Therapy, Human Life Review, IRB, Journal of the American Academy of Religion, Journal of Medicine and Philosophy, Journal of Religion, Journal of Religious Ethics, Medical Humanities Review, Religious Studies Review, Second Opinion, Theological Studies, and Virginia Quarterly Review.
