Nursing Conference

The UTMB School of Nursing and Nursing Service hosted Partnership Excellence in Nursing Education — Texas Dedicated Education Units, a conference sponsored by a grant from the Good Samaritan Foundation. The program focused on supporting student learning and the transition to professional practice.

“T-cell therapies: Where have we come from and where are we going?” was presented by Catherine M. Bollard, professor of pediatrics in hematology/oncology at Texas Children Cancer Center and the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy at Baylor College of Medicine.


“Is medicine like the Cheesecake Factory: New challenges to professionalism” was the topic of Dr. Howard Brody, professor and director of the Institute for the Medical Humanities.

"Understanding the role of exercise and nutrition as therapies to improve muscle function” was presented by Jared Dickinson, assistant professor in the department of nutrition and metabolism.

Preventive Medicine Celebrating

The UTMB department of preventive medicine is celebrating its 100th anniversary and a rich tradition of contributing to advances in preventive medicine and community health practices, education and research. The department was renamed preventive medicine and community health in 1966.

The first chairman, Dr. James Person Simonds, wrote in 1913, “The Department of Preventive Medicine has been established in this university for the specific purpose of helping in the solution of medico-social problems in Texas.”
November Is American Diabetes Month
This month’s meeting of the UTMB diabetes support group Nov. 12  features a potluck meal with recipe exchange.
The group meets from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the second Monday of each month in Suite 9 of the UTMB Multispecialty Center, 2660 Gulf Freeway South in League City. To reserve a place, call 832-505-2300.
Stroke Support Group Meeting
Register by Friday for the next meeting of the UTMB Health stroke support group, supported by a President’s Cabinet award. Thanks and sharing are focuses of this month’s meeting, which has been moved forward due to the Thanksgiving holidays.
The group, for persons who have had a stroke, their spouses, caregivers and significant others, will meet 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in room 2.304 of the School of Nursing/School of Health Professions Building at 1100 Mechanic St. Free parking is available in public garage No. 4, 12th and Mechanic streets. Cancer Support Group
Dr. Nihal Abdulla will discuss new developments in chemotherapy at the next meeting of UTMB’s colorectal and GI cancer support group at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 13 at the UTMB Health Clinics building in Galveston at 1005 Harborside Drive.
The group, open to both cancer patients and their caregivers, will also share a harvest-season meal of dishes from “The Cancer Fighting Kitchen” cookbook prepared by group members. For more information, call Robert Webster at 409-789-5074.
