Annual baby shower to benefit babies born in TDCJ Hospital
UTMB/TDCJ Nursing Services is having a "Baby Shower" to benefit newborns of mothers in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. The shower continues through Oct. 31. Suggested items for donation include diapers, blankets, and all-in-ones. To make a donation, look for the decorated boxes on the second and third floors of the TDCJ Hospital, and in room 8.200 of John Sealy Annex. For information, contact Isabel Walsh.
Annual coat drive set for last week of October
Many Galveston children lack the coats and sweaters to keep them warm during the winter months. With your help, they could have these necessities. The annual fall coat drive is planned for the last week of October. Gently used coats and sweaters in all sizes, as well as books, will be collected at UTMB Oct. 25 and 27 from 11 a.m.–2 p.m. in the John Sealy Hallway. Donations also will be and at the Children's Hospital Fall carnival on Oct. 30.
All donations benefit children in the Galveston community, and distribution will be Nov. 1 at the Island Community Center on Broadway.
Walk all over heart disease and stroke at American Heart Walk
The 2004 American Heart Association Heart Walk will be Oct. 30 at Joe's Crab Shack, 3502 Seawall Blvd. in Galveston. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the 5K walk begins at 9 a.m.
It's not too late to sign up as a walker or organize your own team. If you are interested in walking, forming a team or want more information, call Larry Jendrusch at (409) 772-4430 or Tom Howard at (409) 772-5514.
The American Heart Walk is a national Walking event held across America to increase community awareness of the importance of walking as a heart-healthy exercise, while also raising funds to continue the American Heart Association’s fight against heart disease and stroke.
The money raised through the local walk funds research and education to prevent heart disease and stroke. The American Heart Association supports more than $350,000 annually in research grants to UTMB. Fundraisers like the American Heart Walk are responsible for countless research advances, including CPR, clot-busting drugs and open-heart surgery, all of which are saving lives daily in Galveston County.
UTMB Osler Club meeting set for Oct. 5
Dr. Bruce A. Baethge, associate professor of rheumatology will discuss "The Humor of William Osler" at the next meeting of the UTMB Osler Club on Oct. 5. The meeting will be 5:30–7:30 p.m. in Room 201 of Open Gates, and a light buffet supper will be served.

The UTMB Osler Club is dedicated to the application of Oslerian principles to contemporary medicine and medical education.
Field House now offers child care
The Alumni Field House now offers child care for members and their guests. This allows families with children between the ages of 6 weeks to 10 years to enjoy the facility while their children are supervised in a safe and playful atmosphere. There is a two-hour maximum time period and the cost is $5 per visit for the first child and $3 for each additional child. The hours are 8 a.m.–noon Monday–Saturday and 4–7 p.m. Monday–Thursday. Reservations are required and will be accepted 1 day in advance. Call (409) 747-0415 during the above times to make a reservation. Luke Society needs physician volunteers
The Luke Society is a faith-based group that provides health care to the poor at a street clinic in Galveston. Physicians, other health care professionals and non-medical volunteers staff the clinic from 8–9:30 a.m. Saturday mornings.
The Luke Society has been collaborating with UTMB staff since 1980, and UTMB volunteers have always been critical in making the clinic successful. Health care faculty, residents and students have worked with the organization since the beginning. UTMB has always played a supportive role in this mission. Campus facilities available for retirement parties, year-end celebrations
Open Gates and Rosenberg House facilities are available for all UTMB special events, including employee recognition celebrations. The professional staff at both is eager to assist with the coordination of an event--from picking the date to managing the last-minute details.
