Science teachers gain insight at UTMB-sponsored conference

The UTMB Office of Educational Outreach hosted its Ninth Annual Regional Science Teachers Conference featuring science, technology, engineering and mathematics education on Nov. 15 in Galveston.

The conference was open to kindergarten through 12th grade teachers in public and private schools as well as home-school teachers in the Galveston-Houston region. The conference was supported by grants from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Texas Education Agency (Galveston County Regional Collaborative and Southeast Regional T-STEM Center at UTMB).

Attended by nearly 200 science teachers, participants learned new methods of teaching science concepts and received free science activity handouts and materials. Nina Corley, a teacher at Satori School in Galveston, said, "One need only to step onto our school grounds to see the effects of this year’s science teachers conference. Last Monday, I returned to school with curriculum, books and resources that were immediately shared and put to use in each of our school’s classes."

Dr. Marguerite Sognier, director of UTMB educational outreach and co-director of the Southeast Regional T-STEM Center, said, "This conference was undoubtedly the most rewarding for both the teachers and our staff." Former astronaut Dr. Bernard Harris Jr., the first African American to walk in space, gave the opening address. Other notable conference speakers included Dr. Yvonne Spicer of the Boston Museum of Science and Dr. Marlene MacLeish of the Morehouse College School of Medicine.
