UTMB teams support Relay for Life

UTMB Cancer Cruisers

MAY 4, 2007--The UTMB Cancer Cruisers, led by team captain Kathy Bass, administrative coordinator in the Sealy Center for Cancer Cell Biology, were the top fund-raisers for the recent Galveston Relay for Life. Bass was also the top individual fund-raiser, bringing in more than $5,000 in memory of her son Rex who died in November. Relay for Life is an all-night event that raises money for the American Cancer Society. UTMB researchers benefit directly from the money raised at the Galveston event and from the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. UTMB's Christy Taylor and Lisa Velasquez co-chaired the annual event, which raised more than $100,000. Of that money, more than $15,000 came from the UTMB Cancer Cruisers, which also took home the Spirit of the Relay award. The cruisers were just one of several UTMB teams represented at the event. In all, UTMB teams raised more than $30,000 for the event. Click here for a slide show of UTMB teams at Relay for Life.
