Tillie Demoratsky and colleaguesFEB. 12, 2007--Three days a week, Tillie Demoratsky spends her mornings preparing outpatient records in the Health Information Management offices of the Clinical Science Building. It is the latest in her assignments as a regular volunteer at UTMB. Demoratsky has logged more than 5,500 hours as a volunteer. And at 95, she doesn’t anticipate slowing down.

“It’s good for an old lady,” she said. “It keeps me young.”

Demoratsky turned 95 on Feb. 8, and her colleagues in Health Information Management helped her celebrate by surprising her with cake and balloons.

“There’s lots of work for me,” Demoratsky said. “I keep busy. It keeps my mind active and keeps me happy.”

Volunteering at UTMB, as well as at Moody Gardens and the Grand 1894 Opera House, is how Demoratsky enjoys spending her time. “Don’t do it just because it’s a chore,” she advises. “Enjoy what you’re doing.”

Demoratsky is among the more than 200 volunteers who contribute more than $286,000 in time to the university.
