Students donate books to Children's Hospital

MARCH 9, 2007--Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students from the WAVE program for gifted students at Westbrook Intermediate School delivered several boxes of books to Children's Hospital as part of a class project. The group's teacher, Sandra Burkhalter, challenged her class to come up with ideas for field trips and the students suggested hosting a book drive and then taking the books to someplace that could use them. On March 9, the students delivered the books to the Child Life and School Services department in Children's Hospital, and then received a tour of the facility, learning what a stay in the hospital is like for children their ages. "This has allowed them to do something they know will touch other people's lives," Burkhalter said.

The books, which the class collected from their classmates at Westbrook Intermediate School, will be used in patient rooms, clinic waiting areas and as part of the Reach Out and Read program in the pediatric clinics.
