SOM dean honored for lifetime of achievements
MAY 29, 2007--Dr. Garland D. Anderson, dean of the School of Medicine, recently received a lifetime achievement award at the 78th Annual Joint Meeting of the Texas Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists/Texas Section ACOG in Houston.
The Baden-Gibbs Award is presented annually to a member of the organization who has exhibited a lifelong commitment to foster and stimulate improvements in women’s health care and within the specialty of obstetrics and gynecology, and who has exhibited outstanding leadership in medicine in Texas.
The award, founded in 1998, is named after two pioneers in obstetrics and gynecology in the state who worked diligently to meld three different specialty organizations into the association that exists now.
Before being appointed dean in October 2006, Anderson led UTMB’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology for 17 years.
During his tenure, the department has consistently ranked among the top 20 in National Institutes of Health research funding, and most recently was ranked fourth in the nation.
Anderson’s current research focuses on the adult consequences of fetal disease and on finding ways to reduce racial disparities in pregnancy outcomes. He has worked to enhance the research environment in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, increasing opportunities for basic and clinical studies. Anderson spearheaded the expansion of a 12-clinic satellite program into the university’s highly successful Regional Maternal and Child Health Program.
