Old Red was completed in 1890 as the home of the University
of Texas Medical Department, now known as UTMB. The
Medical Department, housed entirely in the new building,
opened for its first session on Oct. 5, 1891, with 23 students
and 13 faculty.

UTMB Healthcare Epidemiology - Epidemiology is the study of the various factors influencing the occurrence, distribution, prevention, and control of disease, injury, and other health-related events in a defined human population.

Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases - UTMB's primary care pediatric physicians provide a full range of general pediatric care, including well child exams, sports and camp physicals, and evaluation of common illnesses and behavioral problems.

Galveston National Laboratory - As one of two National Biocontainment Laboratories to be constructed under grants awarded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases/National Institutes of Health (NIAID/NIH), the Galveston National Laboratory (GNL) will provide much-needed research space to develop therapies, vaccines and diagnostic tests for naturally occurring emerging diseases such as SARS and West Nile encephalitis, as well as for viral and bacterial agents that might be employed by terrorists.

Center for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases - The UTMB Center for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases (CBEID) has two main objectives: 1) to reduce the vulnerability of the U.S. and other nations to the use of biological weapons for warfare and terrorism, and 2) to alleviate suffering from emerging and tropical infectious diseases through application of basic, applied, and field research, and through education.

Center for Tropical Diseases - Our mission is to alleviate suffering caused by tropical infectious diseases through the application of basic, applied and field research.

Center for Vaccine Development - With 68 faculty members, the center incorporates the expertise of more than 100 cutting edge research programs currently at UTMB.

Department of Microbiology and Immunology - The primary mission of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology is the education of medical and graduate students in the areas of medical microbiology and immunology. Additional goals are the development of new knowledge concerning microbiological and immunologic processes as related to human health and disease.
