Course Overview/Methodology

This educational fellowship was developed to update physicians and mid-level practitioners at University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Correctional Managed Care, regarding HIV treatment methodologies, pharmacological management, diagnosis and treatment of AIDS related diseases as well as opportunistic infections in HIV positive patients. This educational program consists of lectures, audio visual presentations, question and answer sessions and telemedicine demonstrations with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Objectives

After attending this program:

  1. Participants will be able to explain the epidemiology of the HIV epidemic globally, nationally, and in the state of Texas.
  2. Participants will be able to describe the appropriate initial work up and management of an HIV-infected person.
  3. Participants will be able to discuss viral replication, viral dynamics, and the resulting effects on the immune system.
  4. Participants will be able to relate viral load determination to antiretroviral therapy management in HIV-infected individuals.
  5. Participants will be able to identify the principles of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART).
  6. Participants will be able to recognize, diagnose and treat the major opportunistic infections and other complications associated with HIV infection.

Accreditation

AMA Category 1 - The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians. The University of Texas Medical Branch designates this continuing medical education activity for up to 20.45 credit hours in Category 1 of the Physicians Recognition Award of the American Medical Association.
