In an article published in the June issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, new research showed lung cancer deaths were definitively reduced when patients received screening CT chest scans. The scans were done annually, three years in a row, in patients older than 55 with a 30-year history of smoking.

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. In this guest column, Dr. Bagi Jana writes about the increased survivor rate for men who have prostate cancer and touts UTMB's multidisciplinary approach and use of the da Vinci system. Members of the UTMB team who diagnose and treat prostate cancer will be available to meet with the community to review modern treatment options for prostate cancer and answer any questions from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at the UTMB Specialty Center at Victory Lakes in League City.
Our Clinics
The faculty members in our division are involved in clinical practice and clinical research. In addition, we provide unique education opportunities for residents, and fellows. We focus our energies on anemia, benign hematologic malignancies, breast cancer, hematologic malignancies, hemoglobinopathies, hemorrhagic diseases, lymphoma, solid tumors, thrombotic disorders, problems with blood transfusion, and related blood disorders.

The department of internal medicine is developing evidence based clinical protocols which will be available in EPIC (as order sets) for use when admitting patients with these diagnoses. Their AIM is to standardize care and decrease length of stay and readmission rates.
