Join UTMB's Internal Medicine Residency Program
Our residency program organizes multiple annual social gatherings. Many occur in our program director's home on the island, various restaurants, and at Galveston's multiple convention sites including the San Luis Convention Center and the Moody Gardens Convention Center. These are attended not only by our residents, but also their family and our faculty. They include:
- Intern Welcoming Party:
Current and graduating residents and faculty gather to welcome the incoming intern class
- Recruitment Party:
Discuss ideas and become excited about our new applicants
- Halloween Party:
Attendants are encouraged to dress in costume
- Christmas Party:
Residents and Faculty each bring a gift for the White Elephant Exchange.
- Casino Night:
Residents play casino games for raffle tickets and prizes
We honor the achievements of our graduating preliminary interns and 3rd year residents in a formal setting, often with the residents' parents and other family members. Awards are announced, and a video highlighting that year's events is shown.
- Liver Rounds:
The residency program also hosts a Liver Rounds at the end of each 4 week block. These are typically sponsored educational dinners that occur at various local restaurants such as Willie G's and Olympia Grill. Our residents listen to an educational speaker, and celebrate their achievements during the last block.

We aren't the only educational institution on the island:
Galveston Island and the surrounding areas provide a variety of affordable housing to suit any resident's needs. Some of our more popular housing options are as below:
Galveston's "East End" offers many apartments and smaller houses within 5-10 minutes of UTMB. Many of our residents living on the east end of the island bike or walk to campus. Rent for these apartments cost approximately $600, and rentals for condominiums cost approximately $700-800 for a 1 bedroom unit.
Our residents living on Galveston's "West End" enjoy the proximity to grocery stores, restaurants, and larger apartment units.
Galveston's Strand is one of the most popular tourist spots and night life for the locals. Residents staying living in one of these lofts enjoy being close to the "action."
League City / Clear Lake Area
Residents who want to live closer to Houston often choose to reside in the League City area, approximately 30 minutes from UTMB. It is close to a large mall, ethnic cuisine, popular chain stores and many of UTMB's new upscale clinics. There is a variety of nice apartments and houses for all price ranges.
