EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE
|

Student Learning
Center ($2.65 million)
Building on our recent innovations in our School of Medicine curriculum
(emphasizing problem-based learning that takes place in small groups), we are
creating an entirely new physical learning environment for our in-training health care
professionals.
To enhance the educational environment in each of our four schools, we are creating
a Student Learning Center, which will include a collection of 50 small group classrooms,
20 standardized patient rooms (where students get hands-on experience in simulated
patient care settings), five teaching laboratories, distance education technologies
for School of Nursing and School of Allied Health Sciences classrooms, classroom
and office space for the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and offices for
our Center for Educational Development. To support this effort, we are working
to match $4.2 million committed from the Permanent University Fund. |

Faculty, Student
and Program Support (TBD)
Through several smaller efforts to establish endowed chairs and
professorships and establish student scholarships, we are building the resources
that help cement UTMB’s commitment to educational excellence. |

ACCESS AND OUTREACH
|
Telehealth and Distance
Education ($3 million)
In recent years, UTMB has emerged as an international leader in the use of sophisticated
telecommunications technologies to enhance patient care and education. Using these
tools, we can connect with patients and care givers in the rural and remote regions
of our state, enabling them to receive outstanding care without having to make
a lengthy and expensive trip to Galveston. To expand the reach of our efforts,
we are seeking to raise $3 million in endowment resources. |
| |
Maternal and Child
Health ($6.5 million)
Through an extensive network of 39 Regional Maternal and Child Health Clinics
throughout southeast and coastal Texas, UTMB provides essential services to hundreds
of thousands of our state’s indigent. To build on these efforts, we are seeking
to raise $6.5 million to build the kind of technological resources that links
these clinics even more intimately with the UTMB care complex in Galveston. |
| |
Palliative and End-of-Life
Care ($1.5 million)
Having recently received $6.5 million from the National Institute on Aging to
create a Claude Pepper Older Americans Independence Center (one of only 11 in
the United States), UTMB is on the cutting edge of care for the elderly. Building
on these efforts, we are striving to raise an additional $1.5 million to expand
the scope of our clinical outreach to our region’s older citizens (through our
Center on Aging) and endow programs in our Institute for the Medical Humanities
that enhance end-of-life care. |
