Researchers make promising discovery in battle against RSV
UTMB
researchers have achieved promising results with a potential new
weapon against respiratory syncytial virus, the most common
cause of infant hospitalization in the United States. In an
effort to find an effective antiviral therapy for RSV, the
scientists tested two types of complex, custom-designed
molecules to interfere with the genetic machinery that RSV uses
to replicate, or copy itself, within cells.

Gold-Headed Cane finalists named
Five UTMB School of Medicine seniors have been nominated for the
Gold-Headed Cane Award – an honor bestowed on a student who
exemplifies dedication to the health and welfare of patients.
The selection process is done by each year’s graduating class
which compiles a list of candidates. Seniors select the
finalists from that list. This year’s five finalists are: Conner
Chan, Jennifer Flora Knudtson, Viet Pham, James E. Squires and
Jennifer Gail Schopp. The award’s legacy dates to the 17th
century with the passing down of a similar cane by British
doctors. Dr. Charles T. Stone Sr., professor emeritus of
internal medicine at UTMB, established the tradition of the
Gold-Headed Cane Award at UTMB in 1960.

New web tool identifies expertise at UTMB
Research Services recently announced the release of a
new tool to identify expertise at UTMB:
UTMB
Scientific Expertise Search (USES). Beginning March
17, investigators may use it to find collaborators at
UTMB for research and other projects. USES crawls the
web, targets public databases containing information on
researchers, and downloads a subset of data searchable
by keywords. The program then ranks researchers by
number of records with the keywords. The beta version
currently targets publications indexed in PubMed, and
returns nearly 12,000 articles published by UTMB
authors.
