Dr. Garland Anderson, Executive Vice President
and Provost, dean of the UTMB School of
Medicine and the Thomas N. and Gleaves T. James Distinguished Chair,
previously served at UTMB for 17 years as the Jennie Sealy Smith
Distinguished Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Anderson earned his medical degree from University of Tennessee
College of Medicine and completed residency training at the University of
Texas Health Science Center, Houston. He came to UTMB from the University of
Tennessee College of Medicine, where he served as the director of resident
education, as well as division chief of Maternal and Fetal Medicine and
professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. This Fall Dr.
Anderson was honored with the 2007 Outstanding Alumnus Award by the
University of Tennessee College of Medicine Alumni Association. This
prestigious award recognizes the extraordinary service he has given to his
alma mater and the medical profession.
Dr. Anderson’s current research focuses on the adult consequences of
fetal disease and on finding ways to reduce racial disparities in pregnancy
outcomes. He worked to enhance the research environment in the Department of
Obstetrics and Gynecology, increasing opportunities for basic and clinical
studies. During his tenure as chairman, the department consistently
increased its national research ranking—most recently to fourth—as measured
by National Institutes of Health funding.
In addition to accomplishing significant gains in the research arena as
chair of the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Anderson
spearheaded the expansion of a 12-clinic satellite program into the
university’s highly successful Regional Maternal and Child Health Program (RMCHP).
Today, this network of 30 clinic sites provides 347,000 patient visits
annually to woman and children from more than 123 counties in medically
underserved parts of South, Southeast and Deep East Texas.
This past Spring Dr. Anderson was presented with the Baden-Gibbs Lifetime
Achievement Award at the 78th Annual Joint Meeting of the Texas Association
of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in Houston. The award is presented
annually to a member of the organization who has exhibited a lifelong
commitment to foster and stimulate improvements in women’s health care
within the specialty of obstetrics and gynecology, and who has exhibited
outstanding leadership in medicine in Texas.
Named for the second year as a Texas Super Doc by Texas Monthly,
Dr. Anderson has previously been recognized in The Best Doctors in America.
He has also sponsored more than 20 visiting faculty and fellows, and is the
author or co-author of more than 102 papers. In addition, from 1990 to 1994,
he served as chair of UTMB’s Medical Service, Research and Development (MSRDP)
Plan with responsibility for primary care clinics, University Hospital
Clinics and Physicians Billing Service. Under his leadership, the plan more
than doubled its collections. Dr. Anderson has received numerous awards,
including the prestigious Nicholas and Katherine Leone Award for
Administrative Excellence at UTMB and the Society for Maternal Fetal
Medicine Award for Research Excellence.
A strong advocate for women’s and children’s health, Dr. Anderson is
active in his profession at the national level. He is a fellow of the
American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FACOG), has served as
board member and president of the Society of Maternal and Fetal Medicine,
and he has served as the president of the Council of University Chairs in
Obstetrics and Gynecology. From May 2003 to March 2006, he was steering
committee chair of the National Institute of Child Health and Human
Development’s Maternal-Fetal Units Network.
