For the past nineteen years, Kathy Shingleton
has served as the head of Human Resources for UTMB.She originally joined
UTMB as the director of Human Resources in 1987. At that time, UTMB had
7,000 employees, all working on Galveston Island. When Shingleton became the
chief human
resources officer in 1998, UTMB had grown to more than 14,000 employees
working throughout Texas. In her current role as vice president of human
resources and employee services, she is responsible
for benefits, compensation, employee relations, employee assistance,
employee injury management, employee health and wellness, recruitment, nurse
recruitment, organizational effectiveness, training and development,
recognition, HR for correctional managed care, diversity, international
affairs, and HR business information services.
Singleton is an active member of the Gulf Coast Workforce Board, where
she serves on numerous committees to support workforce development in the
greater Houston-Galveston area. Her duties include service on the Health Services Steering Committee,
which is responsible for providing more than $25 million in funding in the past six years
to meet the chronic staffing needs for nurses and other health care professionals.
Prior to joining UTMB, Shingleton's career spanned both the public and
private sectors. She has worked for the UT MD Anderson Cancer Center, the City of Houston, and Boehringer
Mannheim Diagnostics, Inc. She earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology at
Texas A&M University, where she was one of the first women to live on the Texas A&M campus. Her doctorate in
educational leadership and cultural studies, and master’s in business
administration, were earned at the University of Houston.
Shingleton is a native Houstonian. She and her husband of 23 years now live in
League City with an empty nest. They have two grown sons and four beautiful
granddaughters.
