Cary W. Cooper, a native of Camden, Maine, received his A.B. degree from Bowdoin College (Brunswick, ME) in 1961 and his Ph.D. in physiology from Rice University in 1965. After postdoctoral training in pharmacology at Harvard Medical School and the University of North Carolina (UNC) Medical School at Chapel Hill, he joined the faculty of the Department of Pharmacology at the UNC Medical School as an Instructor in 1968 and rose to the rank of Professor in 1977. In 1982, he came to UTMB as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology and served as Chairman until 1996.
In 1994, he was asked to serve as Dean Ad Interim of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and was appointed Dean in 1996. He has published 176 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals and proceedings of scholarly meetings. His research area is bone and gut hormones and growth factors.
