SPECIMEN COLLECTION AND HANDLING

Biopsy Tissue Examination

[ Biopsy Tissue ] Blood Cultures ] Coagulation ] CSF ] Cytogenetics ] Cytopathology ] Fecal ] Pap Smears ] Throat Culture ] Urine Collection ] Viral ] Wound Sample ]

  • Collection: Surgical excision, punch biopsy, curettage. Note: Muscle and nerve biopsies have different, specialized storage and submission requirements. Review instructions for specific test prior to biopsy procedure.

  • Storage: Submit biopsy in 10% neutral buffered formalin in a container labeled with:

  • Patients first and last names

  • Patient Medical Record number

  • specimen identification

  • Refrigeration recommended

  • For microbiologic culture, submit biopsy in sterile container without preservative.
