Receiving/Processing

The Laboratory has several Receiving/Processing areas that accept samples for both STAT and Routine testing. Sample Management distributes Daily and Weekly Laboratory Summary Reports to various location by either pneumatic tube or carrier. Pathology Reports are distributed daily by Surgical Pathology.

Sample Management:

McCullough Bldg., Room 5.136
Telephone: 772-8077 (for pneumatic tube and report delivery questions)
Routine Hours: 24 hours/day, 7 days/week

Microbiology Receiving section:

accepts samples for routine and STAT microbiology tests.
Location: McCullough Bldg., Room 5.137; Telephone: 772-1738
Routine Hours: 24 hours/day, 7 days/week except for Saturday and Sunday from 12 am to 7am.   Call Sample Management during the 12 am to 7 am hours on Saturday and Sunday.

Blood Bank:

accepts samples for routine and STAT blood bank testing.
Location: John Sealy Annex, Room 1.180; Telephone: 772-1524
Routine Hours: 24 hours/day, 7 days/week

Cytopathology:

accepts specimens directly in the Cytopathology laboratory.
Location: John Sealy Annex, Room 9.300;  Telephone: 772-2872
Routine Hours: 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday-Friday
After Hours: Specimens collected after regular work hours can be delivered and stored in refrigerator outside the specimen receiving area of Cytopathology laboratory. Cytology fixatives for spinal fluid and urine can be obtained from this refrigerator.

Surgical Pathology

processes both inpatient and outpatient tissue samples to provide a diagnosis for patient treatment.   Location: John Sealy Annex, Room 2.180; Telephone: 772-2853 or 772-2855
Routine Hours: 7:30 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., Monday -Friday

Specimen Container: One specimen per container. Container must be labeled with patient’s first and last names; hospital or requisition number; and source of tissue. See Anatomic Pathology Alphabetical Listing of Tests for specific collection information.

Courier Rounds

  • The Surgical Pathology Courier will begin morning rounds at 8:00A.M. Monday through Friday in the Clinics, ER, Rebecca Sealy, Sample Mangement.

  • The Surgical Pathology courier will begin afternoon rounds at 1:00P.M. Monday through Friday in the Clinics and Sample Managment.

  • Specimens will be accepted in Surgical Pathology Laboratory until 4:00P.M. Monday through Friday.

  • If you have any specimens in your area after the courier has made rounds tha must be processed STAT, please have your staff transport them to the laboratory (JSA 2.186). 

  • Specimens received after 4:00pm will be processed the next day. 

  • Please contact the Surgical Pathology Laboratory, ext 22855, if you need assistance.

After Hours: Specimens collected after regular work hours can be delivered and stored in the Surgical Pathology refrigerator located in the hallway directly across from the O.R. on the 2nd floor. On-call staff available after hours.

Pediatric Immunology/Allergy

Located in Room C2.360, Children's Hospital.
PRIOR NOTIFICATION IS REQUIRED for all samples tested in this laboratory. Must call ahead to schedule test;  772-2658.  Most tests require normal control drawn and sent at same time. Deliver samples immediately (cells die after 2-4 hours).
